I’ve been doing a bad job of keeping this blog up-to-date on our songwriting: but it is happening! We are writing new songs at least monthly for Song Fu. And here they are:

A song about “loss” – and mostly Twitter – “The Mystery’s Gone”

A song about the very last day of a terrible job – “The Final Countdown”

A patriotic song for “People Like Us” – “The Internet National Anthem”

And a bonus – we wrote a song that was played on the Comedy Bang Bang Podcast – it’s an inside joke if you don’t listen to them, but you might still enjoy it.

We also wrote the theme song for “CredCast” – which is a podcast created by our friend Thaddeous. Listen to that on his podcast!

As always, new videos of original songs, covers and concerts are always going up on our YouTube channel.

You have just over one week until the deadline (April 26) to pre-order our CD. Naturally, after that time you can order the CD in regular ways or buy it from us at our shows, but this will be the last time you can order our sweet pre-order packages.

For $30, you get both CDs (physically and digitally) as well as a cool signed poster.

This amazing patch is designed by @VirtualBri.

For $64, you get the superfan package, which includes this limited-edition patch along with a lot of awesome stuff.

And for $150, you can get a video of Aubrey and I singing our nerdy birthday song specifically to YOU or to someone you love.

With the money we’ve raised so far, we are planning a Doubleclicks tour of California in June as well as an East Coast romp this fall, if all things fall into place. We’re also planning to record an EP this fall with things we’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t afford… and we are SO EXCITED.

Thank you to everyone who has bought stuff so far, and who has donated their time and design skills and advice to the new CD, photos and aforementioned AWESOME PATCH.

I don’t think I need to beg anyone to pre-order, but if you’re on the fence, here we go: we’re a band that shares everything we do for free on YouTube and Bandcamp. We’re bad at keeping new music hidden, so you have gotten our songs on your computers literally hours after we finish writing them. In this CD, we have taken the time to go into a studio and polish up the work we’ve done over the last two years. It’s a shiny new product, so we are taking this moment to ask you to help us finance our time-as-musicians (aka time off our “real jobs”), and our future plans – which include playing music for you where you live!

Thank you all so much for your support and being awesome people.

xxoo

Angela

We love a lot of things about Portland. It’s got good places for brunch. There’s a poutine cart about four blocks from my house. Also: things that aren’t food are also good.

Today I’d like to tell you about some of the people who make us glad that we live where we do.

They’re pirates.

We first met PDXYAR last summer, when we played our first Portland concerts with Marian Call. At that time, the PDXYAR pirate crew was in the process of building “El Tiburon,” a portable pirate-ship-shaped stage and performance area and awesome huge thing that they funded through a Kickstarter campaign. We toured their construction lair, and then they came to our concert, and we all hung out and talked about being pirates, and it was awesome.

Pirates at Bridge City Comics show, July 2011. We were all like "OH MY GOD."

“Pirates!,” we thought. “Cool!”

INDEED, past us. Indeed.

A few weeks later, we were eventually invited over to meet the “pirates” in their lair, to drink their coffee-infused cocktails, play music, and watch fire-dance to Fatboy Roberts’ “Geek: Remixed.”

That night led to a song, they let us play that song on their ship during the Portland Pirate Festival, an altogether kickass experience.

The pirates are awesome people. They inspire happiness and drinking and friendship and joy. They’re nice, they’re very funny, and they’re simultaneously serious about their weapons and pirate history. They have fun and they protect each other. It’s inspiring to be around a group of folks who make a “hobby” into a passion and organize excellence with it. Many of them, in addition to being pirates, are theater folks and dancers and singers and writers of songs.

When you get our new CD, you’ll hear pretty voices singing backup on some of our songs. Those people are from PDXYAR.

When you’re with the pirates, awesome and strange things happen, and it seems normal, like awesome and strange things happen all the time. You find yourself saying things like, “OF COURSE Jessica is belly-dancing to hypnotoad,” or, “OF COURSE all of the Pirates are joining the Eagles Lodge in a moment of alcohol-fueled brilliance,” or, “NATURALLY the PDXYAR female singing trio ‘the Broadsides’ have rewritten the Band Perry’s ‘If I Die Young’ to be about zombies.”

All this leads to the video below. We wrote a song about PDXYAR, and we performed it on Sunday at the Chocolate Potluck show we played with Marian Call. You’ll see PDXYAR joining in with their antics. It makes us smile.

Good morning, Doubleclicks fan!

This is a very exciting e-mail for us – there is so much happening for the Doubleclicks these days. Let’s get to it!

1. Pre-order your CD!

Pre-orders are now officially open for our TWO NEW CDs! The CDs both come out on April 30.

“Chainmail and Cello” is a 15-track full-length album with geeky & non-geeky, funny & heartbreaking, all-original music by The Doubleclicks. The CD has some songs not recorded elsewhere, as well as the first studio recordings of the best tracks from our Song-a-week project.

“Worst Superpower Ever” is an 8-track EP that is a perfect gift for geeky kids and parents, because unlike “Chainmail and Cello,” all of the music is appropriate for little and middle-sized ears.

In addition to digital pre-orders, we are running a kickstarter-like sponsorship campaign for any of you wonderful fans who want to help us be successful independent musicians in exchange for cool prizes. Check out the website and see what you can get – buy a signed poster, a CD, or even a personalized birthday song video! Check out the art below–both covers are made by local Portland artists. The photo for “Chainmail and Cello” was taken by Cahoots Photography & the illustration for “Worst Superpower Ever” was created by Dane Ault of Monkey Minion Press.

I am working on my cold e-mails and tweeting-planning part of this tour myself, but our plans will be much stronger with help from the local peoples (that’s you!).

You can help us in many ways. Tell us where you live and if you’d like to come to a show. Host a private (or open to RSVP-ers) house concert. Help us get in touch with your favorite coffeeshop/local nerd hangout to plan. Take the point on planning a show at your favorite local coffeeshop/local nerd hangout. Offer crashspace. Whatever you do is much appreciated – and one of the most important jobs of all will be helping us get a crowd out to the gig!

TO HELP: read the rest of this post, and leave a comment and/or e-mail us at leftclick@thedoubleclicks.com. And thank you so much!

The following is our current rough schedule – and all of it is ROUGH except for the Wednesday night Meltdown show. Do you live in any of these places? Would you like some awesome geeky music in your area? Are you in a band that would like to share a show? Do you own a game store that puts on music events (or would like to)?

Saturday, June 2: San Diego Area (with “Novel Concept” at Rebecca’s confirmed)

Sunday, June 3: Long Beach (with Allison Goertz at the Library – confirmed)

Monday, June 4: LA/Pasadena – anything and everything!

Tuesday, June 5: private house show (booked)

Wednesday, June 6: Meltdown at the Nerdist Theater (booked)

Thursday, June 7: Big public LA-area show (probably we are set for this)

Friday, June 8: Bay Area/ Silicon Valley (We need something!)

Saturday, June 9: Santa Clara, CA: Show at Illusive Comics. (booked)

Sunday, June 10 & Monday, June 11- Santa Rosa/Redwoods area and/or Southern Oregon

Are you interested in hosting a house show but are afraid that your house is too small/people are scary/other reasonable concerns? YOU MAY STILL BE A PERFECT HOST. We’ve played in tiny one-bedroom houses – we’ve played in a loft apartment. House shows are excellent times, very fun comfortable real experiences that leave everyone feeling warm and fuzzy. They also take less effort on your part than you might think. If you think you might be interested, get in touch.

Any ideas? Leave a comment and/or e-mail us at leftclick@thedoubleclicks.com. And thank you so much!

We did a show tonight for DotConFest, a new all-online convention that’s happening all weekend (gaming stuff is tomorrow!).

Our show was a surreal and amazing experience, and I just wanted to share our thanks.

DotConFest: the convention in my basement!

When our evening started, Aubrey and I were worried about how this streaming concert thing was going to work out. The technology (UStream) is new to us, and, per usual, Aubrey was quite concerned about making the audio sound good (I guess we’re a musical act, so this is logical. I’m glad that she worries about these things). We were both rushing to the very last minute to get the accounts, video, and audio up and working.

In the meantime, our studio audience was arriving at my house. I sent out a call for audience members earlier this week, thinking it would be nice to not play a show just into a silent, unloving webcam. It didn’t really occur to me until later that I would need to clean up my house and find a space to host these people, but thankfully our kind people are awesome, which makes this a pretty low-stress experience. The audience ended up being a combination of fans we don’t know very well, fans we know quite well, and our friends. Jill brought cookies that look like bears in Star Trek uniforms. Ian brought Thin Mints, which are now in my freezer making me very happy.

1: People who bring cookies to things are wonderful. 2: Can you find the Worf cookie?

The show started at 5. After an excellent and mostly-technologically-sound set by DJ REAL, Aubrey and I played our music. Then we answered some questions.

And it all worked! We didn’t get technical hiccups that would have frustrated us and made us all annoyed. The studio audience was looking at us and smiling (in between tweets, of course). The online audience was also happy, we’re told, though we couldn’t see what they were typing. It was a very happy experience. Not every show is one that makes me want to smile the whole time through, but this one was. It made me want to do all of our shows in my basement to about 10 people.

<3

When the show was over, we all sat down to watch Mike Phirman’s set. Mike’s concert ended up as a surreal and hilarious encounter held in his home studio with his two-year-old was running around and dancing adorably. Unfortunately, Mike did not push “record” on his performance, so it has been lost to time. Those of us who saw it will cherish the moments forever. Thank you, Mike.

And thank you all very much: for being in our studio or online audience, for creating and supporting things like DotConFest, for generally adding to our cause so we can participate in things like this and have these moments that make us so very appreciative. I don’t think we thank you enough. You make the Doubleclicks happen, and that makes our lives great.

We’ve been in the studio in all of our spare moments for the last couple months. It’s going well, but it’s quite exhausting and it’s getting old. The good news is that the album is going to be done! Eventually! And you’ll be able to listen to it! Sometime! YAY! The exhaustion of the studio has made having shows all the more important, however – to remind us why we’re doing the hard parts of this whole “musician” thing.

See more pictures of our show below.

You can also watch the whole show, recorded as it was broadcast, on the DotConFest UStream!

To find out more about DotConFest and its other streaming events, go here!

So here’s the thing: JoCoCruiseCrazy is happening this week. So are conventions, conferences and concerts all around the country. The problem is: most of the time, those things aren’t near you. They’re far away. They’re expensive.

But now there’s DotCon: the convention at your desk.

A clever man named Chris Wright decided that we should have an online “convention” this week, for those of us who are going to be sitting at our computers, pouting about the fact that Wil Wheaton and Jonathan Coulton and our other nerdy friends won’t even be tweeting. And what started as a “for the rest of us” project has now evolved into something awesome.

Here’s the stats:

February 23-26: There will be events! These events feature nerdy awesome people including us (the Doubleclicks), Mike Phirman, screenwriter and funny person Josh Cagan, Bad Astronomer Phil Plait, cartoonist and newly-made muppet Len Peralta, the swag geniuses from ThinkGeek, game designer Logan Bonner, and many more. There will be music. There will be movies. There will be prizes! There will be ice cream!! (suggest your flavors now to enter the competition)!!

And it’s all happening online. You’ll just pull up your browser, go to the DotConFest website (and sometimes Google+ – so make sure you have an account there), and you’ll be walking into a convention!

Check out the website for information. Our event, a live-streaming concert, will happen Saturday at 5pm PST – that’s 8pm EST. We’ll also be hanging out in the chatrooms and hashtags all weekend – so we’ll hope to see you there!

Here’s the event schedule: plan for greatness!
