I don’t think I need to beg anyone to pre-order, but if you’re on the fence, here we go: we’re a band that shares everything we do for free on YouTube and Bandcamp. We’re bad at keeping new music hidden, so you have gotten our songs on your computers literally hours after we finish writing them. In this CD, we have taken the time to go into a studio and polish up the work we’ve done over the last two years. Good morning, Doubleclicks fan! 

This is a very exciting e-mail for us – there is so much happening for the Doubleclicks these days. Let’s get to it!

1. Pre-order your CD!

Pre-orders are now officially open for our TWO NEW CDs! The CDs both come out on April 30.

“Chainmail and Cello” is a 15-track full-length album with geeky & non-geeky, funny & heartbreaking, all-original music by The Doubleclicks. The CD has some songs not recorded elsewhere, as well as the first studio recordings of the best tracks from our Song-a-week project.

“Worst Superpower Ever” is an 8-track EP that is a perfect gift for geeky kids and parents, because unlike “Chainmail and Cello,” all of the music is appropriate for little and middle-sized ears.

In addition to digital pre-orders, we are running a kickstarter-like sponsorship campaign for any of you wonderful fans who want to help us be successful independent musicians in exchange for cool prizes. Check out the website and see what you can get – buy a signed poster, a CD, or even a personalized birthday song video! 2. New Song: “The Nerdy Birthday Song” & More to come!

Now that the album is done, we finally have some time to make some videos and show you our new music!

This week, we posted our “Nerdy Birthday Song” on YouTube. Enjoy it, and sing it to your friends on their nerdy birthdays.

3. Upcoming shows: Portland, Seattle, Boston:

Seattle, WA: Norwescon: 4/7 & 4/8, several appearances, free with con registration

Our headlining show will take place Saturday evening at 10pm in the Evergreen Room, right after our friends Vixy & Tony play. We are also participating in a number of panels, and we hope to see you at those! Check out our website for a full listing.

Portland, OR: Easter Potluck with Marian Call: 4/8, 7 p.m., $10

Do you like… Chocolate? Do you like… nerd-folk music? You will LOVE our concert with Marian Call at the East Portland Eagles Lodge (at 50th and Hawthorne). The Stephen Webber blowout concert is one of the most fun events we do all year. We will be returning to our hometown of Westford, MA, near Boston, where we will join our dad and a large group of talented musicians to bring whole new dimensions to our music. 4. Future plans:

We’ve booked upcoming appearances at Rose City Comic-Con in September, Portland’s “Can’t Stop the Serenity” event, and some summer shows in Southern California. Details on those will come as they get closer. We are still hoping to play a show in Las Vegas the weekend of May 4th and 5th, and are working on an East Coast tour. The Doubleclicks

So here’s the thing: JoCoCruiseCrazy is happening this week. So are conventions, conferences and concerts all around the country. The problem is: most of the time, those things aren’t near you. They’re far away. They’re expensive.

But now there’s DotCon: the convention at your desk. 

A clever man named Chris Wright decided that we should have an online “convention” this week, for those of us who are going to be sitting at our computers, pouting about the fact that Wil Wheaton and Jonathan Coulton and our other nerdy friends won’t even be tweeting. And what started as a “for the rest of us” project has now evolved into something awesome.

Here’s the stats:

February 23-26: There will be events! These events feature nerdy awesome people including us (the Doubleclicks), Mike Phirman, screenwriter and funny person Josh Cagan, Bad Astronomer Phil Plait, cartoonist and newly-made muppet Len Peralta, the swag geniuses from ThinkGeek, game designer Logan Bonner, and many more. There will be music. There will be movies. There will be prizes! There will be ice cream!! (suggest your flavors now to enter the competition)!!

And it’s all happening online. You’ll just pull up your browser, go to the DotConFest website (and sometimes Google+ – so make sure you have an account there), and you’ll be walking into a convention!

Check out the website for information. Our event, a live-streaming concert, will happen Saturday at 5pm PST – that’s 8pm EST. We’ll also be hanging out in the chatrooms and hashtags all weekend – so we’ll hope to see you there!

Bellingham, Washington: MARCH 7: This all-ages show is taking place at the WWU Underground Coffeehouse at 516 High Street in Bellingham. The music starts at 8, so get there early and we’ll all hang out. Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA!!: MARCH 9: We’ll be taking over the Chicazul Productions Loft at 350 E 2nd Ave in Vancouver. This is a house-show-type-show – so if you’re into bringing food to share and friends to introduce to new music, you are in luck! Tickets are $10+, depending on your generosity, and are ON SALE NOW. Redmond, Washington (it’s near Seattle!), MARCH 12: This is going to be an excellent show. We’ll be sharing the evening with Vixy and Tony, a band of many instruments and lovely sounds. The show takes place at Soulfood Books, which we’re told is a wonderful venue there at 15748 Redmond Way in Redmond. There’s no charge at the door, but please bring something to drop in the hat – because – at least for this period of time – we’re doing this “music” thing instead of other things that might pay us a steady income. (Facebook Event) (Non-Facebook event page)

So there’s the tour! Print yourself a poster, (made by the amazing @virtualbri) and recruit all of your friends that live in these areas.

A couple notes: We play shows where we can and when we can – which pretty much depends on finding fans that can gather friends, give us floors to sleep on and make us believe that we’ll get enough donations to pay for gas. If you think you can do those things, we will probably come play for you! Email angela@thedoubleclicks.com. That’s all it takes.

Have you heard it yet? The first song we wrote for SongFu has now been released! We were given a prompt – to write a song about Bioluminescence – and we did!

Upcoming shows!

Southern California? We’ll be there next week! On February 10, we’ll finally make it to Hollywood! Er, Culver City. BUT STILL! If you live in that area, or have friends that do, please help us get a crowd for our first California show!

An INTERNATIONAL tour?? It’s crazy but true… in March, we will be touring to Vancouver, BC - and stopping in Redmond and Bellingham Washington on the way. This tour is possible because of the amazing fans who have contacted us and demanded that we come play in their homes, apartments, and colleges. All of these shows are *technically* free… but we are going to need some gas money, so if you are willing to throw us a couple-$10 so we can make our way home, we’d appreciate it. If you’re in Portland, you’ll see us playing short sets around town quite a bit in the coming months.. including February 17 with Kirby Krackle! Our next big full-show event will be the “GeekPortland GeekParty,” which we are organizing with GeekPortland.com. On March 3 at the East Portland Eagle’s Lodge, you can see us, our piratical friends the Broadsides and the epic Robot Uprise play some music interspersed with trivia, pictionary, and other fun activities (with prizes!) run by GeekPortland’s Kenna Conklin. The Doubleclicks

And what does that mean to you? It means that we’ll be writing and releasing (at least) one song per month in answer to *celebrity* songwriting prompts. The first month’s prompt was given last night by the inedible John Hodgman. 

We will be COMPETING in the monthly songwriting challenges against the fantastic Molly Lewis. Good news on that front: you really don’t have to pick sides. This is going to be a fun, friendly “head to head” competition ”challenge,” and there’s no need for it to get ugly. Right, Molly? Molly?

Each month, Molly and we will also be facing a *celebrity challenger* — this month’s challenger is the be-bearded John Roderick of Twitter and The Long Winters. Each month we’ll be recording a podcast with Molly, Ken, and the *celebrity challenger* to discuss the prompt and songwriting process. If you listen to Ken’s “Bit of a Chat” interviews you’ll know that he’s good at the podcasting stuff, so I trust that this will all be very entertaining.

We will be sharing the challenges with a hopefully large and enthusiastic songwriting public in the Song Fu forums. If you are a songwriter, I highly recommend you join in: we have found that a deadline and a specific topic are some of the best drivers of GETTING CREATIVE STUFF DONE!

In 2011, we came up with our band name, did 6 months of song-a-week, played tons of shows, went out of town for the first time, and met a bunch of people I prefer to not call “fans,” many of whom are now our friends. The Doubleclicks project has gone from “a thing” to “A THING” over the past 12 months. It’s really weird–as in unusual–not everyone gets to do the things we get to do now. We get to create things and share them with people that like them. We get to go to a heck of a lot of nerdy events. Best of all, we get to play shows in front of the kind of people we’d like to walk off the stage and play Zombie Dice with. It is weird. And great.

For a lot of this, we must thank Paul and Storm. They have advocated for us and connected us with most of the awesome stuff we did in 2011 and some of what we’ll be doing in 2012. At the “w00tstock presents” show in November, Paul and Storm told a little bit of the story of how we got hooked up with them: we sent them an e-mail, “WHICH NEVER WORKS,” and told them we would like to play a show with them. They would like to emphasize, and often do, to us and others, that sending them an e-mail “NEVER WORKS.” They say that it worked for us because our e-mail was short – and I just looked at it – it was 84 words. Their response, inviting us to do a set at “Nerds and Music,” was only 78 words. We’re glad it worked (THOUGH IT NEVER DOES). We’re glad they made Marian tour with us and pushed us to play at GeekGirlCon and brought us on stage at PAX. We’re also glad they’re nice to us. If y’all haven’t figured it out yet from their podcast, Paul and Storm actually run the world. We’re just glad we’re on their good side.

We also have to thank Brad Jonas, who made our music video and is the funniest person in the world.

2012 is the time

2011 was a set of circumstances that were very odd and awesome. We did things, we worked hard–but it sometimes felt like things were “happening to” us. 2012 is the year where we work hard enough to earn it – the year that we “happen” all on our own. Once this blog post is up, I have to go on to the next thing on my to-do list, which is to get the eff back to writing songs.

Song-a-week was great for this. It was probably the best thing we’ve done, but it was also a relatively miserable thing to be doing while also being employed full-time. But guess what? I’m not employed full-time anymore! I’m not employed at all! Haha!*

This year we’ll be back on deadline for some songwriting (not weekly, but you’ll see…). We’ll be recording our album in the next few months, as well as, when financially possible, playing in different parts of the country. Norwescon – in Seattle. We are also in serious talks for shows in LA and Vancouver, BC. If you want to host a house show or have us play somewhere in your town, always get in touch with us.

And lastly, thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you to the Pirates, to the “This Fantasy World” DnD group, to everyone who has interviewed us or played us or talked about us on your podcast or blog, to everyone that told their friends/wives/sons/daughters about us, everyone who follows us on Twitter (there are 1,000 of you now!), everyone who talks to us on Twitter and other social medias, people who send us emails, people who got us Christmas presents and made us feel like rock stars, folks who play games with us and make us more nerdy by the day, and the people that agree to hang out with us and call us the Doubleclicks as if being the Doubleclicks makes it famous. I don’t know what “deserving” the amazing positive energy you guys give us would feel like, but I don’t think we really do. Y’all are too great.

We know “THIS NEVER HAPPENS.” This year, we’ll keep trying to earn it.
