DotConFest: the (free) convention at your desk!

So here’s the thing: JoCoCruiseCrazy is happening this week. So are conventions, conferences and concerts all around the country. The problem is: most of the time, those things aren’t near you. They’re far away. They’re expensive.

But now there’s DotCon: the convention at your desk.

A clever man named Chris Wright decided that we should have an online “convention” this week, for those of us who are going to be sitting at our computers, pouting about the fact that Wil Wheaton and Jonathan Coulton and our other nerdy friends won’t even be tweeting. And what started as a “for the rest of us” project has now evolved into something awesome.

Here’s the stats:

February 23-26: There will be events! These events feature nerdy awesome people including us (the Doubleclicks), Mike Phirman, screenwriter and funny person Josh Cagan, Bad Astronomer Phil Plait, cartoonist and newly-made muppet Len Peralta, the swag geniuses from ThinkGeek, game designer Logan Bonner, and many more. There will be music. There will be movies. There will be prizes! There will be ice cream!! (suggest your flavors now to enter the competition)!!

And it’s all happening online. You’ll just pull up your browser, go to the DotConFest website (and sometimes Google+ – so make sure you have an account there), and you’ll be walking into a convention!

Check out the website for information. Our event, a live-streaming concert, will happen Saturday at 5pm PST – that’s 8pm EST. We’ll also be hanging out in the chatrooms and hashtags all weekend – so we’ll hope to see you there!

Here’s the event schedule: plan for greatness!

And if you’re confused: leave a question in the comments below or email us: leftclick@thedoubleclicks.com

We’re going North! Bellingham, Vancouver BC, and Redmond, WA!

It’s happening! It’s happening SOON! From March 7-12, we will be having our very first International Tour, thanks to an amazing group of folks who have planned house shows and recruited audiences and begged and pleaded with us. Here are the details:

Poster by Brian Tatoski!

Bellingham, Washington: MARCH 7: This all-ages show is taking place at the WWU Underground Coffeehouse at 516 High Street in Bellingham. The music starts at 8, so get there early and we’ll all hang out. This is a “free” show, but we’ll be suggesting you bring a $5-$10 donation to support live geeky music and us having a place to sleep.

Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA!!: MARCH 9: We’ll be taking over the Chicazul Productions Loft at 350 E 2nd Ave in Vancouver. This is a house-show-type-show – so if you’re into bringing food to share and friends to introduce to new music, you are in luck! Tickets are $10+, depending on your generosity, and are ON SALE NOW. Buy early, buy often, because there’s limited space at the venue. Start showing up around 7pm. And thanks, Canada!

Redmond, Washington (it’s near Seattle!), MARCH 12: This is going to be an excellent show. We’ll be sharing the evening with Vixy and Tony, a band of many instruments and lovely sounds. The show takes place at Soulfood Books, which we’re told is a wonderful venue there at 15748 Redmond Way in Redmond. There’s no charge at the door, but please bring something to drop in the hat – because – at least for this period of time – we’re doing this “music” thing instead of other things that might pay us a steady income.

So there’s the tour! Print yourself a poster, (made by the amazing @virtualbri) and recruit all of your friends that live in these areas.

A couple notes: We play shows where we can and when we can – which pretty much depends on finding fans that can gather friends, give us floors to sleep on and make us believe that we’ll get enough donations to pay for gas. If you think you can do those things, we will probably come play for you! Email angela@thedoubleclicks.com. That’s all it takes.

You’ll notice that there are some holes in this “tour” schedule. If you live in the Northern region and want us to play a house show or another kind of gig in between the shows we’ve announced above…we will try to make it happen. Just email me. (angela@thedoubleclicks.com)

An INTERNATIONAL tour?? It’s crazy but true… in March, we will be touring to Vancouver, BC - and stopping in Redmond and Bellingham Washington on the way. This tour is possible because of the amazing fans who have contacted us and demanded that we come play in their homes, apartments, and colleges. All of these shows are *technically* free… but we are going to need some gas money, so if you are willing to throw us a couple-$10 so we can make our way home, we’d appreciate it. See complete show listings here!

If you’re in Portland, you’ll see us playing short sets around town quite a bit in the coming months.. including February 17 with Kirby Krackle! Our next big full-show event will be the “GeekPortland GeekParty,” which we are organizing with GeekPortland.com. On March 3 at the East Portland Eagle’s Lodge, you can see us, our piratical friends the Broadsides and the epic Robot Uprise play some music interspersed with trivia, pictionary, and other fun activities (with prizes!) run by GeekPortland’s Kenna Conklin. It is going to be mucho fun, and I hope you save the date! See complete show listings and details here!

What else?

We are currently in the studio recording our new album. Our new album(s). What? Two albums? I’ve said too much….

Song Fu 1: “The Way I Glow”

This month, we had to write and record a song “about bioluminescence,” because John Hodgman told us to, and we’re doing a thing called Song Fu, which, among other things, requires that we occasionally do what John Hodgman tells us to do. (This is a blog post I wrote explaining Song Fu.)

We recorded a podcast with Ken Plume & Molly Lewis about the songwriting process for this month. YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT. (mp3 link)

And you can listen to the song we wrote about Bioluminescence, and even download it, if you want:

It’s called “The Way I Glow.”

The Songwriting Process

When the prompt for this month’s challenge was announced, I immediately decided that I didn’t want to be “too literal” in the interpretation of the challenge. This is one of the many winning strategies that I’ve learned from the reality fashion-designer-TV show Project Runway: don’t be too literal about the challenge. (Also: be true to your own aesthetic, be nice to nice people, and don’t use tulle).

There were a lot of ways still to go with Bioluminescence, however. For example: did you know that there is a bioluminescent creature with a Latin name that literally means “vampire squid from hell”? It’s true. Ask Wikipedia.

“The Way I Glow” is a song from the point of view of a bioluminescent girl, who is heartbroken and angry and maybe a little confused about why this dude broke up with her.

We must thank the scientists on Twitter (and my Bio 100 teacher) who helped us understand the affects of Green Fluorescent Protein: I’ve learned, for example, that if you tried to make a person glow the way you make mice glow with GFP, it would mostly show up in a person’s mucous membranes–mouth, nose, eyes, etc. Learning! Yay!

Plugs & Links

Stay tuned for next month’s Song Fu. The prompt will be announced on the Song Fu website on February 6.

Just over a dozen songwriters responded to this month’s Song Fu prompt. You can see all those entries in the Song Fu forum. You should also listen to and spend money on the song Molly Lewis wrote for this prompt, which I will embed below.

Shirt orders are open once again!

Head over to the new shirt store to buy a shirt! Per usual, we are only offering shirts by pre-order for a limited time. You need to order before February 6 to get a shirt.
